Dear Alumni Entrepreneurs and Business Professionals,

The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization is hosting its 14th SESI Midwestern Entrepreneurship Conference at Eastern Michigan University. It’s an all day long event that is free and open to the public. We provide both breakfast and lunch to our attendees as well as two keynote speakers, and two sets of break-out sessions. Over the past 14 years of running the SESI Midwestern Conference, the CEO club has hosted speakers, such as Representative John Dingell, Chris Holman of The Greater Lansing Business Monthly magazine, Tom Root of Zingerman’s, and several others that covered a wide array of entrepreneurial material. Along with speakers, the conference also hosts the Skandalaris Business Plan Competition at both the college and high school levels. We’d be honored if you’d join us for this year’s event on Friday, February 11th at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center. For more information about the conference and to register please visit our website. Registration is required for this event.

Thank you,
Melissa Heatlie

Miaisha’s Moment

Miaisha Peoples (BS 09)

Educated, unique, sophisticated, hardworking, outgoing and a heart of gold. Just a few descriptive forms of word play to describe me Miaisha R Peoples (BS 09). Born and raised in Flint, MI by a single mother I am no stranger to adversity and making the best out of life by always striving for all I deserve and more.

My latest endeavor was enrolling into Eastern Michigan University’s graduate school to seek my MBA with a specialization in Marketing Management last year. I also became the Student Outreach Intern for the Office for Alumni Relations where I get to work at giving back to my alma mater and the current student body. Seeing as how I am graduate of Eastern Michigan University’s class of 2009 this makes me a proud member of Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD). While working to receive my Bachelor’s of Science (cum laude)  in Public Relations double minor in Business and Theatre Arts, I was very involved and active on campus. Dean’s List Status was a must as academics were and are still very important to me. The various scholarships I received while in attendance at EMU and was ever so grateful for the opportunity to achieve my dreams and enrich my future at the same time.

Academics weren’t the end of my EMU resume, I did so much more socially and community service wise during my four years. Attaining membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc by way of Xi Chapter serving as the Standards Chair and taking the role of Public Relations chair in Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. Another organization in which I helped start the EMU section of as well as served as the Public Relations chair was the National Council of Negro Women. In 2007, I was crowned Ms. Black and Gold in the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc, Epsilon Eta chapter’s Scholarship Pageant. My theatre arts concentration encouraged me to participate in the productions while at EMU. I performed in the Vagina Monologues, At the Punchbowl, and I was costume and makeup crew head and member for Reefer Madness and Angels in America: Prehostrika. I was also an EMU Red/IM intramural champion in billiards just to name another EMU accolade. Helping others in my community is an ability to serve in which I never take lightly. I participated in several community service efforts while at EMU such as the Gilbert Home, Tots for Tweens, Thanksgiving Baskets, MLK-DAY clean up, and more.

Overall, I loved my undergraduate years at EMU they crafted me into the young lady I am today granted they weren’t all good times but so far they’ve been my best times. I’ll be keeping you updated on what I’m doing now, what I’d like to be doing in the future, and just random outbursts about happenings around me that I think will be interesting to talk about hope you enjoy. And be sure to follow me on twitter @EMU_SOAR!
